Finding Creative Harmony: A Music-Inspired Cardmaking Break

A Creative Pause Away from the Screen

Every so often, I need to step away from my computer and return to something more tactile, like traditional cardmaking. There’s something restorative about working with paper, color, and texture instead of pixels. When I give myself space to slow down, my ideas flow more freely, and even my eyes get a well-deserved rest.

This time away from the digital world isn’t just about crafting; it’s a reminder that creativity doesn’t always need a screen. The rhythm of cutting, gluing, and layering helps me refocus with a quiet conversation between imagination and my hands.

Exploring New Papers and Products

My exploration for a new paper source (because you can never have enough) led me to Spellbinders Paper Arts. Their 100 lb cardstock caught my attention immediately — heavier than what I usually use, but perfect for sturdy, detailed cards. Spellbinders recently sent me some musical instrument dies to try out, and I couldn’t wait to test them.

I ended up purchasing a few more items from Bibi Cameron’s Musical Notes Collection, including the coordinating sentiments and die sets. Even though I’m not an expert with my manual die-cutting machine, the results amazed me — clean, sharp cuts and easy handling. The extra weight of the paper made a huge difference, especially for those tiny details that love to tear at the last minute (none this time — success!).

Why Spellbinders Won Me Over

I also tried their refillable tape runner, which turned out to be another pleasant surprise. It’s slightly larger than the ones I usually buy, which actually made it more comfortable to hold, and the adhesive applied smoothly without skipping. It’s the little things that make crafting more enjoyable, right?

Between the luxurious cardstock and the precision of the dies, this collection reminded me how much fun hands-on creativity can be. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced maker, these tools make it easy to create something beautiful.

The Inspiration: A Town Full of Music

I live in Oberlin, Ohio, a small town with a deep love for music and a world-renowned Conservatory. Music fills the air here — from practice rooms and concerts to spontaneous street performances. It’s no wonder that Bibi’s music-themed die collection struck such a chord with me.

In fact, music is what first brought me to Oberlin years ago, when I planned to study at both the Conservatory and the College. My path eventually shifted toward science and then art and design, but music remains a heartbeat in my creative process. This card is my tribute to that chapter of my life — and a reminder of how creativity evolves while keeping its melody.

Supplies I Used

Reflecting on Creativity and Calm

Much like photography or a quiet walk in nature, cardmaking helps me reconnect with the small details that bring joy — texture, color, rhythm. Whether it’s a die-cut note or a scrap of gold cardstock, every element feels like a note in a larger composition.

If you’ve been feeling creatively drained, I encourage you to take a break from the screen and let your hands do the thinking. You might be surprised by what inspiration you find waiting.

Stay creative, stay curious, and let your art flow — just like a melody through the trees.
